These
ribs add to a very nice Halloween Costume or a Horrifying Creature Prop.
The shirt allows you to wear your Horror Ribs proudly, like a medal of Horror.
Materials Needed:
1 - Black Tee Shirt
2 - Cans of Foam Insulation (You can get this
at Home Depot of any hardware Store)
1 - Sheet of 3' by 4' Construction Paper
1 - Glow Stick (Optional)
1 - Bottle of Liquid Latex (You pick the size)
1 - Bottle of red food coloring
1 - Beating Heart (Optional)
Paints - Colors - red, blue, black, and white
Instructions:
Step 1 - Lay the Black tee Shirt flat on a
table or floor, front facing you.
Step 2 - Get the Foam Insulation and make a
back bone on the shirt, starting from the top and working your way down. Remember
not to build up the foam too much , you want to keep the ribs down, you don't
want to look too bulky. As you proceed down with the Foam Insulation move from
right to left in a zigzag motion, this will give texture to the back bone. Remember
the foam expands so keep the back bone about 2" in width, when dry it will expand
to 3".
Step 3 -After the back bone dries get the
Foam insulation and create some lungs and intestines (Again remember to keep
the foam thin, if it gets to thick, you can always trim it down with a utility
knife. Just don't cut your fingers or the blood on the ribs will be real). The
lungs are just an oval shape, one on each side of the back bone, towards the
upper chest. The intestines are made by spraying the foam in a right to left
direction. Remember to make the intestines under the lungs and over the back
bone. Let dry overnight and move to Step 4.
Step 4 - Get the construction Paper and bend
it around your upper torso, (You need the shape of your body so the Horror Ribs
fit comfortable) staple or tape the Construction Paper around your torso and
slip it off. Now you have a replica of you body's size.
Step 5 - Remember where your chest was on the
Construction Paper,(That's where you are going to make the Horror Ribs). Go
to Diagram 1 for a picture of ribs and use the Foam Insulation to create the
Horror Ribs on the Construction Paper. (The bend in the Construction Paper will
allow the foam to dry to the shape of your body. Allow the Horror Ribs to dry
overnight. DIAGRAM 1
Step 6 -When the back bone, lungs and intestines
are dry you can paint them. Mix the paints mentioned above for the colors you
will need, red + white = pink, etc., etc.. Paint the lungs a pinkish color and
the intestines a light blue color. If you are using the Beating Heart cut a
groove in the center of the lungs for the heart to fit into. If you want to
be exact make the groove a little to the left.Then glue the heart into the groove
you just cut.
Step 7 -Cut another groove for the glow stick
in the back of the ribs, (This will give an eerie glow to the lungs and intestines)
insert the glow stick. Break the glow stick when you are ready to horrify your
friends.
Step 8 - Glue the Horror Ribs over the lungs
and intestines, you might have to trim down the lungs and intestine to make
the ribs fit. Do the trimming before you paint the lungs and intestines.
Step 9 - Get the latex and mix it with a few
drops of red food coloring, (We find that this makes the best permanent blood)
and put some on the ribs. When the latex dries you won't believe the results.
You can also pour some latex on a flat surface and let dry overnight, when it
dries you can use it for hanging flesh. Use the latex to apply the flesh you
made onto the ribs, don't over do it.
Step 10 - When your new Horror Ribs dry you
are ready to wear them with pride, just put an old button up shirt over them
and leave the buttons unbuttoned.
