Flashing Eyes.
Materials needed :
8 -Flexible mic stands if you can get them or you can use some PVC
tubing, 1 inch and heat it up with a torch and bend it to a permanent
position for the legs.
6 - Red LED's for the eyes
1 - Old basket ball
1 - 2 foot piece of Styrofoam ( you can get
it in any craft store)
1 - Old 110 volt motor (if you have one laying
around ) make sure you get a motor that doesn't get too hot, remember
it has to be mounted on the plywood and we don't want a fire.
1 - 2x4
1 - 4x4 piece of plywood
3 yards of fur material (Any fabric store
should have it)
1- 9 volt battery
1 -Can of 3M spray glue
All together it should cost
about $40 to make.
If you are not
interesting going through the trouble to make your own Giant
Spider you can purchase one from our Bodies Shop
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1- Cut the plywood with a jig saw into the shape of a figure
eight.
Step 2- Cut the 2x4 to fit on the
plywood you just cut so that you have 1 piece on each side of the
figure eight plywood.
Step 3- Cut the PVC tubing into 3
foot sections and heat where the spiders joints should be.(If you
are using the flexible mic stands you will be able to bend them
in any position).
Step 4- Drill holes big enough so
the PVC or mic stands fit into the 2x4's.
Step 5- Cut the basket ball in half,
this you will use for the head.
Step 6- Puncture 6 holes in the basket
ball half so you can insert the eyes (LED's) , if you don't know
where the eyes go just look up spiders on the Internet for some
photos, this will also come in handy for the detailing Step.
Step 7- Place the LED's into the holes
and wire them up, positive.
To positive and negative to negative, you can use a 9 volt battery
for the power.
Step 8-Cut a hole large enough for
the battery to fit through in the front part of the figure eight
plywood (later you can Velcro the battery on the bottom of the wood).
Step 9- Cut the Styrofoam into a u
shape and glue it onto the plywood, facing the pointy end away from
the head (basket ball).
Step 10- Place the small motor on
the front end of the plywood, bend a coat hanger so that when attached
to the motor shaft it moves back and forth, and cut a hole in the
basket ball for the coat hanger to slip in and out of. (When spider
is done you will put some fake spider web on the coat hanger giving
the illusion of the spider spinning a web ( the coat hanger should
go in and out).
Step 11- Glue the half basket ball
with the LED's on to the front of the plywood allowing the coat
hanger to fit through the hole and also allowing the motor power
cord to fit through the battery hole you cut earlier.
Step 12- Glue the legs in position
Step 13- Cut 2 small triangles from
the left over plywood and use them as the spiders fangs (screw them
to the front part of the plywood.
Step 14- Now here comes the fun part,
now that the spider frame is complete, get the 3m spray glue and
spray the spider and the fabric with the glue, first on the legs
one leg at a time and then on the body applying the fabric a little
at a time. Don't forget to cut holes for the LED's.
Step 15- This step is optional , to
give some detail to the spider I used my air brush and painted the
joints black and the gave some spider markings on the spiders back
for a detailed look. Paint in a can should do the job also.
That's it, it took about 4 hours to complete but it really was worth
the time, when your done you will have a spider that spins a web,
has glowing red eyes and is about 3 feet long.
THE WEB
Materials Needed - 200 feet of cloths line
1 - Hot glue gun (Warning: use
the hot glue gun with caution, these glue guns run very hot and
can cause a serious burn)
INSTRUCTIONS:
There aren't many steps to this project, just connect a piece of
clothes line together forming a circle about 6 inches in diameter.
Then connect 16, 6 foot pieces of clothes line to the circle and
then continue to connect the 6 foot pieces starting from the 6 inch
circle and working your way out to the outer ridge. That's it, you
will have a 6 foot spider web for your 3 foot spider.
